If you’ve found yourself struggling with your skin, unsure why you’re constantly breaking out or your complexion is lacklustre, below are a few harmful skincare habits you should cut out today.
Being too aggressive with your skin
Your skin is your body’s largest, most exposed organ, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t as sensitive as the rest of them. Being too aggressive with your skin—picking at it when you have a blemish or using hot water to wash your face—can cause reactions that lead to permanent scarring or a less-than-ideal complexion.
Getting too much sun exposure
An old skincare myth is that sun helps to heal acne. In reality, sun exposure is a leading cause of skin irritation and blemishes. Too much sun exposure will dry out your skin, stripping it of its natural oils, and causing it to overproduce oil as compensation, leading to breakouts. If you like to spend a few hours under the sun to even out your complexion, consider slathering on that moisturizer afterward or, optimally, avoiding sun altogether.
Being too handsy
The oils and bacteria from your hands are known to cause acne, so make it a point to avoid touching your face throughout the day. This also goes for talking on your cellphone—the bacteria accumulated on your screen can cause you to break out, so make sure to disinfect it as often as possible to avoid painful acne.
Not washing your makeup brushes regularly
The old makeup sitting on your brushes will accumulate bacteria, so if you don’t wash them often enough you will find yourself regularly dealing with uncomfortable acne. It can be tedious to wash your brushes often, especially if you use them every day, but it can make a world of difference to the overall look of your skin.
Being too stressed
Stress is known as a big culprit for sallow complexions and acne breakouts. Not being stressed is often easier said than done, but if you can try to get in enough sleep and maintain some relaxing practices throughout the day you’ll definitely notice a difference when it comes to the quality of your skin.

Always opt for a gentle cleanser. Clay cleansers or those with an alcohol base can make your skin feel cleaner, but that’s because they tend to strip away your natural oils. Instead opt for something hydrating and gentler on the skin that still washes away dirt and effectively removes makeup.
Use the right cleanser for your skin type. Everyone’s skin is different, which is why we all need different cleansers to get the job done. Get to know what kind of skin you have (oily, dry, or combination) and find cleansers that target your specific issues.
Use warm water. Avoid hot water at all costs when washing your face. It will only irritate and dry out your skin, leading to more breakouts down the line.
Don’t scrub skin. Don’t fall for the deep exfoliating fads and wash your skin gently with your fingers. Brushes or beaded cleansers will irritate the skin and can cause microtears.
Wash your face morning and night. The best practice seems to be washing your face twice daily, or when needed, like after a sweaty workout. Anything less and you won’t remove enough dead skin and grime; anything more and you risk drying out your skin.
Never forget to moisturize. If there’s one thing to remember when washing your face is to always moisturize after in order to maintain the natural oils and lock in hydration. Not moisturizing enough can lead to dry skin and premature wrinkling.
If you want to give your skin care routine some extra support, then work from the inside out and try goldn hour’s collagen infused sparkling water today!

If you’re finding yourself struggling with lacklustre hair, brittle nails and unpredictable skin, then here are a few superfoods to include in your diet for long-term results.
The nutrition in leafy greens cannot go understated, but particularly so with how their high amounts of Vitamin C maintain immune function and overall wellness. They help to combat the effects of free radicals in the body, which are associated with aging and a loss of collagen. Adding a few greens to your dinner or morning smoothie is an easy way to bulk up your nutrition and give you that healthy glow.
Blueberries are an easy and delicious way to make your hair thick, your skin plump, and your nails strong. The antioxidant properties in this tiny fruit help to combat aging and acne so that your skin stays supple for longer. Adding a few blueberries to your smoothie or morning cereal might just be the right ingredient to give your body what it needs to stay healthy.
If you’re looking to give your skin a big boost, then look no further than healthy fats, particularly from fish. They are incredible sources of omega-3 fatty acids, which keep skin thick and supple. Fatty fish are also a great source of Vitamin E, an important antioxidant for the skin. Pair that with the high amount of zinc and your skin will be looking great in no time. If seafood isn’t quite up your alley, then try adding a gldn hour sparkling water infused with 5g marine collagen—an easy and delicious way to get that glowing skin.
Carrots are a great source of Vitamin A, which has been linked to anti-aging and healthy hair and nail growth. They are an easy snack to munch on while working and can easily be added to a smoothie for a nutrition boost along with the other superfoods on this list.
Oatmeal is one of those breakfast choices that might not seem very exciting, but is jam-packed with nutrients that will keep your skin and nails looking great. Its protein keeps you full for longer while its vitamins and minerals help to improve the way your body functions. Iron, zinc and Vitamin B all work together to keep your skin glowing and your hair and nails strong.
Almonds (among other nuts and seeds) are a biotin-rich food that is great for maintaining the health of your nails, hair and skin. Biotin also boosts your immune system and helps manage blood-sugar levels. Grabbing a handful before a workout or on your way to work is an easy way to make your skin glow and make your hair shiny after the harsh winter months.
Whether you’re trying to improve the appearance of your hair, skin and nails or just interested in adding a few new fruits and vegetables to your diet, it’s important to make your nutrition work for your needs. Using the right foods to improve your wellness from the inside out is simple, yet incredibly effective for transforming your health in a way that’s right for you. Give these superfoods a try and let us know how they’ve helped you!
While the idea of a glow up might be different for everyone, there are a few commonalities that make many of us want to ditch the unhealthy behaviour and focus on improving ourselves every day. This can be as simple as adding a workout to your daily routine, incorporating more hydrating foods and drinks into your diet, or simply make sure you get in that beauty sleep to wake up every day feeling refreshed and ready to tackle a busy schedule.
If you’re looking to start your new year glow up right at home, below are a few simple ways to get started on your transformation.
Moving your body daily is a simple, yet effective way to improve your overall wellness. Regular cardio vascular activity (yes, this includes apartment-friendly workouts like jumping jacks or weight training!) has been shown to reduce stress levels and increase circulation, which leads to clearer skin. Working out regularly—even if it’s just a walk around your neighbourhood during lunch—also leads to more energy and promotes REM sleep.
If you’re looking for a reason to sweat it out in 2021, consider the amazing physical and mental glow up regular workouts will give you!
An often overlooked wellness practice that is great for both your mental and physical health is drinking more water. Most of us, whether we like to believe it or not, are underhydrated. This can be recognized with dry skin, brain fog, insatiable hunger—the list goes on! Your glow up for 2021 might be as simple as adding an extra glass of water to your morning routine, eating more water-dense fruits and veggies, or drinking a gldn hour sparkling water infused with collagen for that extra glow.
The best way to improve yourself often starts from the inside out. Give your body the nutrients it needs and it will give back thanks with a clearer complexion, more energy and a calm mind.
When you have more time at home than you expected a great way to kickstart your glow up is by developing a few self-care rituals. These rituals can be both mental and physical—the key is to show yourself the love and appreciation we often neglect to in our fast-paced, busy lifestyles.
Some might find comfort in a bit of nail or hair care at the end of a long day. Applying a fresh coat of polish or a hydrating mask could be just what you need to feel relaxed and rejuvenated. Others might want to add morning meditation or journaling to their schedule as a way to stay calm and mindful during all the curve balls life throws. The options are endless, but the key is to make them true to who you are so that your glow up represents who you ultimately want to be.
Sleep can often feel like a luxury, especially if you’re a busy mom, overworked student, or incredibly passionate about your career. Lying down for 8 hours a night might feel like a waste of time when there’s just so much to do before the next day. While there’s no denying the need for productivity, you shouldn’t have to sacrifice your beauty sleep to achieve it.
A few of the common benefits of a full night’s sleep is an increased immune system, improved memory and cognitive function, and an overall better mood. If your new year’s resolution is to look and feel great, then search no further than your own bed!
Self-improvement is always an admirable goal to strive for, which is why we all love a good before and after transformation. However, taking care of yourself from the inside out is just as important as working on your external appearance. Without the right diet and self-care practices for you, there’s only so far an external change will take you. If you’re looking to glow up from the comfort of your home, then be open to trying a few new things that can drastically change how you feel about your daily lifestyle.
The DL: Collagen is a protein found in our bodies that creates structure for not only our skin (what we all care about!), but also our joints, bones, and nails. Although our bodies naturally produce collagen, the process starts to slow down in our early twenties. For reference, by the time you are 50, our natural collagen stores are half of what they were in our teens and early twenties. Research suggests that supplementing with a daily serving of collagen (5-10g) helps replenish some of that collagen loss by triggering production. Clinical studies have shown that prolonged supplementation of collagen increases hydration and elasticity of our skin and helps smooth fine lines!
Myth #2: I will notice a difference right away!
The DL: We wish! Like all great things in life, smooth skin, thick hair, and stronger nails takes time to build, especially with ingestible beauty. When you supplement with collagen, you may not experience the same visual satisfaction of plump and hydrated skin like when you use your favorite moisturizer. However, we like to think of it more as a marathon rather than a sprint. Most research suggests you should start to see results in 4-6 weeks, with maximum benefits kicking in around 3 months. Thats why we recommend drinking 1 can of gldn hour a day (see #gldnlife routine!).
Myth #3: Collagen supplements are only great for skin.
The DL: Like we mentioned above (and in our Collagen Beginner's Guide), collagen is an essential protein in our bodies that promote structure. If you are supplementing with collagen, you may even start to notice joint pains disappearing, improved gut health, and stronger hair/nails.
Myth #4: Collagen is all the same.
The DL: Make sure you are supplementing with the type of collagen for your goals because not all collagen is created equal. Most ingestible collagen is categorized as type I, type II and type III and is sourced mainly from bovine (cows), porcine (pig) and marine (fish). Bovine and porcine have been shown to be effective, however a 2015 study found that marine collagen enters the blood stream faster and up to 1.5x more efficiently (and why we chose marine collagen in gldn hour!).
Myth #5: I have a 🔥 skin care routine so I don't need collagen.
The DL: Here is a quick refresher on what your skin is made up of - the epidermis (outermost layer), the dermis and the deeper hypodermis. We are all for using external skin care products, but the majority of us are only targeting the outermost layer and most of what we use is not absorbed into the dermis/hypodermis. Supplementing with collagen helps you build beauty from both sides, as hydrolyzed collagen travels through the blood stream to the dermis, which is where the body manufactures collagen.
The REAL DL: Don't forget that beauty starts from within!
]]>We often get asked - (1) how much collagen should I take and (2) how long does it take before you start seeing results? It's not the easiest question to answer, but we have put together a gldn hour beginner's guide to collagen below:
1. 5g/day is a great start!
There are many types of collagen and sources, with the most popular being Type 1 (marine & bovine), Type 2 (Chicken), and Type 3 (Bovine).
gldn hour infuses beauty benefits by using 100% hydrolyzed marine collagen, which is the most digestible and bioavailable form of collagen, making it it very easy for our bodies to use. When specifically taking marine collagen, the daily recommended serving ranges for 5-10g/day vs. 10-20g/day for other types of collagen.
2. Fine lines or deep wrinkles?
Research suggests that different doses of marine collagen can target different levels of beauty. For example, consuming 5g of marine collagen/day will target fine lines, and 10g/day will super charge your beauty routine and help with deep wrinkles!
3. How long does it take to see results?
Although we believe collagen is a key ingredient for building beauty, you likely won't see results over night. The truth is that every person and body is different, so it is very hard to pin point exactly how long it will take before you start seeing results. However, just like most things, consistency is key (30-60 days of daily supplementation). Here is what you can expect:
4. What are you other goals?
Depending on your other goals and needs (outside of hair, skin and nails) here are the recommended servings:
To make it very easy to get your daily dose of collagen for 1 month, gldn hour created the #gldnlife routine. The #gldnlife with give you 30 cans of gldn hour + 6 cans for free (12 of each flavor) to keep you covered for an entire month. Order here and start enjoying the #gldnlife!
